Overview: An Engineering Manager is responsible for overseeing and optimizing complex manufacturing and production processes. This multifaceted role involves leading a team of engineers, managing tooling, implementing advanced process improvement initiatives, ensuring cost reduction, scrap reduction, and enhanced efficiency.
As an Engineering Manager, you will report directly to Plant Manager
Success in this role requires a strong technical background, leadership skills, project management expertise, a commitment to quality, and continuous learning. The manager must be proficient in using advanced analytical tools, implementing Lean and Six Sigma methodologies, and staying current with industry standards and safety regulations. Effective communication, problem-solving, and cross-functional collaboration are also key to driving innovation and efficiency in manufacturing processes.
Responsibilities:
1. Technical Leadership:
a. Provide technical leadership to a team of process engineers, overseeing their day-to-day activities and long-term career development.
b. Foster a culture of technical excellence within the team, encouraging the use of advanced engineering methods and tools.
2. Process Optimization:
a. Lead and actively participate in detailed process analyses, utilizing advanced statistical and computational techniques to identify opportunities for optimization.
b. Develop, implement, and manage comprehensive process improvement strategies, encompassing areas like cycle time reduction, yield improvement, waste reduction, scrap reduction, productivity enhancement, and efficiency improvements.
3. Tooling Management:
a. Develop and execute a comprehensive tooling management strategy that includes the selection, maintenance, and end-of-life planning for critical tools and equipment.
b. Implement advanced predictive maintenance programs to ensure the availability and reliability of tooling, minimizing downtime and disruptions.
4. Engineering Changes:
a. Manage engineering change requests (ECRs), overseeing their evaluation, approval, and seamless integration into production processes.
b. Collaborate with design and R&D teams to ensure engineering changes are executed in alignment with product and process requirements.
5. New Product Introduction :
a. Lead cross-functional teams in the successful introduction of new products into the manufacturing environment.
b. Ensure that new products are integrated into existing processes with minimal disruption and maximum efficiency.
6. Tooling Improvements:
a. Continuously evaluate tooling performance and identify opportunities for enhancement.
b. Develop and execute tooling improvement projects to improve tooling durability and performance.
7. Cost Reduction in Tooling:
a. Identify and implement cost reduction strategies related to tooling and equipment, including strategic sourcing, vendor negotiations, and value engineering.
b. Analyze Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) for tools and equipment.
8. Extending Tooling Life:
a. Establish tooling maintenance programs, including condition monitoring and predictive maintenance, to extend the lifespan of critical tools and equipment.
b. Develop and execute strategies to minimize tool wear and extend the useful life of tooling components.
9. Team Training:
a. Develop and deliver technical training programs tailored to the needs of the process engineering team.
b. Provide mentorship, coaching, and guidance to help team members enhance their technical skills and knowledge.
10. Equipment Installations:
a. Oversee equipment installations, ensuring that new machinery or tools are integrated seamlessly into existing processes.
b. Coordinate with suppliers, maintenance teams, and operations to ensure equipment readiness and functionality.
11. Release of New Equipment:
a. Manage the planning, evaluation, and implementation of new equipment releases in coordination with relevant stakeholders.
b. Oversee the testing, validation, safety, and commissioning of new equipment to ensure seamless integration with existing processes.
12. Maintenance of Equipment and Tooling:
a. Develop and implement comprehensive maintenance programs for equipment and tooling, ensuring maximum uptime and reliability.
b. Schedule and coordinate preventive and corrective maintenance activities to minimize production disruptions.
13. Cost Reduction Opportunities:
a. Continuously identify cost-saving opportunities within production processes.
b. Initiate cost reduction projects, track their progress, and ensure successful implementation.
14. Scrap Reduction:
a. Develop and implement strategies to reduce scrap and defects in production processes, using advanced quality control and process improvement techniques.
b. Collaborate with cross-functional teams to optimize product design, materials, and production methods to minimize waste and improve product quality.
15. Productivity and Efficiency:
a. Implement measures to enhance overall productivity and process efficiency, optimizing labor, equipment, and resource utilization.
b. Evaluate and apply advanced lean and Six Sigma methodologies to drive process efficiency and productivity improvements.
16. OEE Metrics:
a. Implement Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE) metrics and methodologies to evaluate and improve equipment and process performance.
b. Analyze OEE data to identify areas for improvement and enhance equipment utilization.
17. Capex (Capital Expenditure):
a. Collaborate with the upper management to plan, justify, and execute capital expenditure projects.
b. Ensure that Capex investments align with strategic process improvement goals.
18. Definition of Tooling per the Process:
a. Define and document tooling requirements specific to each manufacturing process.
b. Collaborate with design and manufacturing teams to ensure that tooling supports the process effectively.
19. KPI Analysis:
a. Define, monitor, and analyze Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) for process and equipment performance.
b. Use KPI data to identify trends, weaknesses, and opportunities for improvement.
20. Corrective Actions:
a. Investigate and address process-related issues, defects, and deviations through systematic root cause analysis.
b. Implement corrective actions and process changes to prevent recurrence.
21. Value Added vs. Non-Value-Added Analysis:
a. Conduct detailed analysis to distinguish value-added activities from non-value-added activities in production processes.
b. Implement Lean principles to eliminate waste and non-value-added steps, optimizing process efficiency.
22. Process Definition:
a. Document and maintain comprehensive process definitions, including standard operating procedures (SOPs), process flow diagrams, and work instructions.
b. Ensure that processes are well-defined, consistent, and aligned with industry standards.
Qualifications and Requirements:
Education:
· Typically, a bachelor's degree in engineering, such as mechanical engineering, chemical engineering, industrial engineering, or a related field, is the foundational education. However, a master's or Ph.D. in engineering can be advantageous for advanced roles.
Experience:
1. Work Experience: Several years of relevant work experience in process engineering management or a related role is essential. 5 years of experience.
2. Industry Knowledge: Battery Cable and Wire Harnesses, Automotive Industry
Certifications:
1. Green Belt, Black Belt, or Master Black Belt in Six Sigma
2. AutoCAD
3. Minitab
4. ERP management.
5. ISO/TS, IATF
Additional Requirements:
· Availability for occasional travel as necessary.
· Willingness to work extended hours as required, particularly in urgent situations or during new product launches.
