Project Manager I (Ciudad Apodaca)

The Industrial Components Division of the Industrial Powertrain Solutions (IPS) Segment is seeking an experienced Project Manager with a mechanical engineering background to focus on New Product Development (NPD) projects. This role provides the opportunity to manage projects and gain diverse exposure to differing aspects of the business, products, strategic initiatives, leadership, and teams. In this role you would support the highest priority, most complex, largest revenue impact projects within the division or the segment. The NPD environment is highly collaborative and requires a high energy, driven, assertive communicator with a strong sense of urgency. Project work is dynamic, product launch scale is large, and experience with highly engineered products in an integral manufacturing environment is a plus.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage 2-5 large and complex global NPD projects through the entire NPD lifecycle (market/customer analysis, feasibility/business case, development, product/market launch, and measure commercial success) while managing to a structured NPD Stage Gate Process.
- NPD projects range from pure mechanical, new technology development, digitally connected, service, or a hybrid of the above.
- Projects outside of NPD can include strategic initiatives, major cost savings, and product line simplifications.
- Identify, align, and manage the cross‑functional team and work status when teams are separated across multiple regions.
- Leverage highly developed planning and organizational skills to assign individual responsibilities, develop and monitor scope, budget, resources, schedules, and risk mitigation plans to deliver committed milestones.
- Guide teams to meet Stage Gate Exit commitment dates while ensuring adherence to Gate Exit Process, deliverable completion, and Gate Exit approval thresholds.
- Actively communicate and mitigate issues before they impact the project.
- Protect the critical path and, when necessary, escape with urgency to remove obstacles, evaluate move‑forward options using opportunity cost and business metrics, and lead corrective actions.
- Act as the single point of contact within the business for the project, accountable for project success and budgets.
- Develop and manage the overall project work breakdown structure and integrated master schedule to deliver projects on time, within budget and to scope.
- Develop critical path analysis and identify means to accelerate timelines, reduce cost, and mitigate risk.
- Assertive leadership for countermeasure plans to course‑correct off‑track projects (schedule, budget, resources, scope).
- Learn, practice, and coach the application of the CFI (Customer Focused Innovation) Process to prepare detailed project plans, facilitate team meetings, Gate Exit Decisions, and communicate project status to all levels of the organization.
- Exercise indirect people management to motivate the team while working across departments to achieve common goals.
- Challenge traditional methods of thinking to ensure the work is always structured in the most effective manner to achieve project goals.
- Control project work to align with the approved project scope, budget, and schedule.
- Design and deploy Visual Management to track project status and key metrics.
- Utilize multiple levels of planning and management tools to reinforce accountability and clarify individual ownership.
- Operate independently and consistently focus on top priorities.
- Support the development of Project Management Best Practices, process, and continuous improvement initiatives.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Engineering (mechanical or similar discipline).
- MBA preferred.
- 3 to 5+ years of project management experience for complex, cross‑functional and multi‑site teams in a manufacturing environment.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Experience working closely with product management and/or strategic marketing during the early initiation of the project, including market analysis, customer VOC, creation of customer requirements, marketing requirements document, feasibility analysis, and the business case, preferred.
- Results‑driven and willing to operate in an environment of conflicting priorities and compressed timelines.
- PMP Certification with Project Management Institute (PMI) preferred.
- Ability to apply financial and business acumen to daily decisions required.
- Experience with scheduling tools such as MS Project (and others), proficient with the MS Office package.
- Experience with APQP, Design for Lean Six Sigma, waterfall, and/or agile project management.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to travel up to 25% of the time.
- Interpersonal/Leadership Skills: Ability to influence in a matrix management environment.
- Experience in leading, supervising, and/or mentoring others.
