Environmental Specialist

The role:

The Environmental Specialist is responsible for ensuring environmental compliance across NFE's La Paz LNG and power facilities by implementing environmental programs, managing regulatory obligations, and supporting sustainable operations. Serving as the site's environmental subject matter expert, this role coordinates environmental permitting, regulatory reporting, monitoring programs, emissions and waste management, audits, inspections, and environmental risk mitigation in accordance with applicable regulations and corporate standards. Working collaboratively with Operations, Maintenance, Marine, Logistics, contractors, and regulatory authorities, the Environmental Specialist supports continuous improvement initiatives while helping ensure the safe, reliable, and environmentally responsible operation of the facilities.

What you will do:

• Ensure compliance with all applicable Mexican federal, state, and local environmental regulations related to natural gas storage, regasification, distribution, and power generation, including requirements from ASEA, SEMARNAT, and PROFEPA.
• Manage environmental permits and authorizations, ensuring timely submission of reports and compliance with permit terms and conditions (ETJ, EIA/MIA, ERA, PPA, LAU, COA, and other applicable permits).
• Prepare, submit, and maintain all required environmental reports, including Annual or Semiannual Environmental Impact Reports, the Cédula de Operación Anual (COA), and other regulatory filings.
• Coordinate the renewal and administration of environmental bonds, permits, and regulatory authorizations.
• Ensure full compliance with the Environmental section of the SASISOPA Management System, including updates, modifications, and implementation throughout the project lifecycle.
• Monitor compliance with environmental commitments established in environmental impact authorizations, ensuring mitigation, corrective, monitoring, and reporting measures are effectively implemented.
• Develop, implement, and maintain methane emissions management programs, including LDAR and PPCIEM reporting, ensuring compliance with applicable regulations and corporate standards.
• Plan, coordinate, and oversee environmental monitoring programs, campaigns, inspections, and field activities to verify environmental compliance.
• Develop and maintain the Environmental Compliance Matrix and environmental compliance program, ensuring timely execution of all regulatory obligations.
• Lead environmental training and awareness initiatives to promote environmental compliance and sustainability across the organization.
• Ensure the availability, maintenance, and readiness of environmental emergency response equipment, including spill response materials and related resources.
• Develop and implement waste management, recycling, and waste reduction programs for both hazardous and non-hazardous waste.
• Identify opportunities to reduce environmental impacts by implementing initiatives focused on waste minimization, energy efficiency, and greenhouse gas emissions reduction.
• Collect, analyze, and report environmental performance data and key performance indicators (KPIs), supporting regulatory reporting and continuous improvement initiatives.
• Conduct environmental risk assessments, identify potential environmental liabilities, and implement preventive and corrective measures.
• Develop, maintain, and coordinate Environmental Emergency Response Plans and protocols based on facility risks and operational activities.
• Investigate environmental incidents, determine root causes, and implement corrective and preventive actions in compliance with regulatory requirements.
• Coordinate and support internal and external environmental audits, ensuring timely resolution of findings and continuous improvement of the Environmental Management System.
• Partner with Operations, Maintenance, Marine, Logistics, and other cross-functional teams to integrate environmental requirements into daily operations and support business continuity.
• Manage environmental compliance activities, budgets, and work plans to achieve regulatory compliance while preventing adverse environmental impacts.
• Drive continuous improvement of environmental management systems, processes, and sustainability initiatives, promoting operational excellence and environmental stewardship.

What you bring:

• Bachelor's degree in Environmental Engineering, Environmental Sciences, Biology, Chemical Engineering, or a related field.
• Minimum of 5 years of experience in environmental regulatory compliance within the oil & gas, energy, power generation, or hydrocarbon industry.
• Strong knowledge of Mexican environmental regulations and permitting requirements, including ASEA, SEMARNAT, and PROFEPA regulations, as well as environmental management systems such as SASISOPA.
• Experience managing environmental permits, regulatory reporting, environmental monitoring programs, audits, inspections, and compliance activities.
• Knowledge of greenhouse gas emissions management, methane emissions programs (LDAR/PPCIEM), hazardous and non-hazardous waste management, and environmental impact assessments.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to evaluate environmental risks and develop practical, effective compliance solutions.
• Ability to interpret, research, and apply environmental laws, regulations, technical standards, and industry best practices.
• Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively across multidisciplinary teams.
• English proficiency is considered a plus.
