Smart Wind Turbines

Job Summary
A Wind Turbine Commissioning Engineer is responsible for planning, executing, documenting, and validating the commissioning activities required to bring wind turbines and associated electrical systems into safe commercial operation. The role ensures that mechanical, electrical, control, and communication systems are installed correctly, tested thoroughly, and perform according to manufacturer specifications, project requirements, and industry standards.
Key Responsibilities
Technical Commissioning
- Perform commissioning activities on onshore wind turbines.
- Verify correct installation of mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, and control systems.
- Execute turbine energization, functional testing, and start-up procedures.
- Conduct pre-commissioning, commissioning, and performance verification tests.
- Validate turbine operation according to OEM specifications and project requirements.
- Troubleshoot faults during commissioning and start-up phases.
Electrical Testing
- Perform insulation resistance, continuity, grounding, and protection relay tests.
- Verify medium-voltage and low-voltage electrical systems.
- Test transformers, switchgear, converters, and protection systems.
- Ensure safe energization of substations and collector systems.
- Validate SCADA and communication network functionality.
Controls & SCADA
- Configure turbine control systems and communication interfaces.
- Verify sensor calibration and control logic performance.
- Conduct remote monitoring system testing.
- Ensure proper operation of alarms, interlocks, and safety functions.
- Support integration of turbines into wind farm SCADA platforms.
Documentation & Reporting
- Complete commissioning checklists and test reports.
- Record non-conformities and track corrective actions.
- Maintain commissioning documentation in accordance with project procedures.
- Prepare handover packages for clients and operations teams.
- Review and approve commissioning records before project completion.
Health, Safety, and Quality
- Follow all HSE regulations and permit-to-work systems.
- Conduct job hazard assessments before commissioning activities.
- Ensure compliance with lockout/tagout (LOTO) procedures.
- Participate in site safety meetings and toolbox talks.
- Report safety observations, incidents, and near misses.
- Adhere to quality management requirements and industry standards.
Project Support
- Coordinate with construction, electrical, mechanical, and operations teams.
- Support project schedules and commissioning milestones.
- Assist with turbine acceptance testing and client inspections.
- Participate in punch-list management and project closeout activitie
Required Qualifications
Education
- Bachelor's degree in:
- Electrical Engineering
- Mechanical Engineering
- Mechatronics Engineering
- Renewable Energy Engineering
- Or related technical discipline
- B2 english level
Experience
- Typically +3 years in:
- Wind turbine commissioning
- Power generation
- Electrical testing and commissioning
- Experience with major OEMs such as Vestas, Siemens Gamesa, GE Vernova, Nordex or Enercon
Certifications (Preferred)
- GWO Basic Safety Training (BST)
- GWO Advanced Rescue Training (ART)
- High-voltage switching certification
- First Aid/CPR certification
- Working at Heights certification
- Electrical Safety/LOTO certification
Working Conditions
- Frequent international/national travel to wind farm sites.
- Work at turbine hub heights exceeding 130 meters.
- Outdoor work in varying weather conditions.
- Rotational schedules
