The research we do and the products we develop improve outcomes for patients around the world. As a Manager for Medical Affairs - LATAM North you serve as the Medical Affairs lead for Baxter's Advanced Surgery business across Mexico, Central America, and the Caribbean. Based in Mexico City, the position is responsible for all regional Medical Affairs activities, including scientific and clinical engagement, surgeon education, key opinion leader development, evidence generation, medical strategy execution, and cross-functional support.
The successful candidate must be a Medical Doctor with meaningful surgical experience and the clinical credibility to train and educate surgeons on Baxter's hemostat, sealant, and related Advanced Surgery products. The role requires frequent customer interaction, participation in operating room and laboratory-based education, and collaboration with regional and global partners while maintaining scientific integrity and compliance.
What you'll be doing
Medical Affairs Leadership
- Lead and execute all Advanced Surgery Medical Affairs activities across LATAM North.
- Develop the regional Medical Affairs plan in alignment with Americas and Global Medical Affairs priorities.
- Serve as the primary medical and scientific expert for the Advanced Surgery portfolio in the region.
- Provide medical guidance on clinical evidence, appropriate product use, the competitive landscape, and emerging surgical practices.
- Identify regional medical needs, evidence gaps, and opportunities that can improve patient care and inform business strategy.
- Ensure Medical Affairs activities and scientific exchange are conducted in accordance with applicable policies and compliance requirements.
Surgeon Education and Clinical Training
- Lead evidence-based education and hands-on training for surgeons using Baxter hemostat, sealant, and related Advanced Surgery products.
- Design, coordinate, and facilitate surgeon training programs, workshops, wet labs, cadaver laboratories, simulation activities, and scientific symposia.
- Provide clinically credible instruction on product selection, mechanisms of action, procedural application, and the clinical evidence supporting appropriate use.
- Support educational initiatives for established surgeons, fellows, residents, and early-career surgeons.
- Collaborate with internal partners to ensure training materials are scientifically accurate, clinically relevant, and compliant.
- Represent Medical Affairs as clinical faculty or scientific lead at customer training events and regional educational programs.
KOL Engagement and Scientific Exchange
- Develop and maintain peer-to-peer relationships with surgeons, key opinion leaders, academic centers, healthcare systems, and professional societies.
- Conduct balanced, compliant scientific exchange with healthcare professionals.
- Gather, document, and communicate actionable medical and customer insights to appropriate internal stakeholders.
- Identify opportunities for advisory boards, research collaborations, scientific partnerships, and educational initiatives.
- Represent Baxter Medical Affairs at relevant national and regional congresses and scientific meetings.
Evidence Generation and Scientific Communication
- Identify opportunities for investigator-initiated research, collaborative studies, real-world evidence projects, and publication activities.
- Partner with regional and global Medical Affairs and Clinical Affairs colleagues to address evidence needs.
- Support scientific dissemination through presentations, educational content, publications, and congress activities.
- Provide medical review of scientific and educational materials relevant to the Advanced Surgery portfolio.
- Monitor relevant literature, clinical developments, and regional trends affecting hemostasis, sealing, and surgical care.
Cross-Functional Partnership
- Partner with Commercial, Marketing, Clinical Affairs, Regulatory Affairs, Market Access, Government Affairs, and Global Medical Affairs.
- Provide medical support for product launches, customer engagements, strategic accounts, congresses, and regional initiatives.
- Deliver internal scientific and clinical education to appropriate Baxter colleagues.
- Act as a trusted medical advisor while preserving the independent, non-promotional role of Medical Affairs.
- Coordinate priorities across multiple countries and ensure resources are focused on the highest-impact regional needs.
Planning, Operations, and Measurement
- Develop annual objectives, activity plans, and budget recommendations for LATAM North Medical Affairs.
- Manage projects, vendors, educational activities, and regional deliverables within approved timelines and budgets.
- Maintain appropriate documentation of Medical Affairs activities, insights, and outcomes.
- Track relevant performance indicators and provide routine updates to Medical Affairs leadership.
- Operate independently in a complex, matrixed, and geographically dispersed environment.
What you'll bring
Education
Medical Doctor (MD) degree required. Equivalent non-physician advanced degrees will not meet the minimum qualification.
- Formal surgical training and meaningful clinical experience in a surgical specialty required.
- Current or previous experience practicing in an operating room environment required.
Professional Experience
- Minimum of five years of combined experience in surgical clinical practice, Medical Affairs, Clinical Affairs, academic medicine, clinical research, or the medical device industry.
- Demonstrated experience educating or training surgeons and other healthcare professionals.
- Experience presenting scientific and clinical information to surgeons, key opinion leaders, and multidisciplinary healthcare audiences.
- Demonstrated ability to interpret and communicate clinical evidence.
- Experience working across functions, countries, or cultures in a matrixed environment.
Knowledge and Capabilities
- Strong knowledge of surgical practice, perioperative care, operating room workflows, and procedural education.
- Clinical credibility and confidence engaging surgeons on complex scientific and procedural topics.
- Understanding of Medical Affairs principles, scientific exchange, and appropriate interactions with healthcare professionals.
- Excellent presentation, facilitation, relationship-management, and written communication skills.
- Strong project management, prioritization, and independent decision-making capabilities.
Language and Location Requirements
- Fluency in Spanish and English required.
- Portuguese proficiency preferred.
- Must be based in Mexico City, Mexico.
- Ability and willingness to travel extensively throughout Mexico, Central America, and the Caribbean, including customer visits, congresses, and clinical training programs.
Preferred Experience
- Clinical background in general surgery, cardiothoracic surgery, trauma surgery, bariatric surgery, colorectal surgery, surgical oncology, minimally invasive surgery, or another relevant surgical specialty.
- Experience with topical hemostats, surgical sealants, tissue repair products, adhesion prevention technologies, or related surgical medical devices.
- Experience leading cadaver labs, wet labs, simulation programs, procedural workshops, or other hands‑on surgeon education.
- Previous Medical Affairs or medical device industry experience.
- Established relationships with surgeons, academic institutions, or professional societies within LATAM North.

- Provides dedicated Medical Affairs leadership for Advanced Surgery across Mexico, Central America, and the Caribbean.
- Has responsibility for all Medical Affairs activities within the assigned geography.
- Frequently engages externally with surgeons, key opinion leaders, healthcare systems, academic centers, and scientific societies.
- Works closely with Americas and Global Medical Affairs and regional cross-functional partners.
- No direct reports anticipated at initial appointment.
