Electrical Protections Engineer (Power Systems)

Responsibilities

• Configure and test protection relays and/or RTUs/PLCs for electrical protection and control schemes of substation systems and generation stations
• Prepare factory acceptance test (FAT) procedures and testing environments for customer projects
• Implement protection schemes and logic diagrams based on technical drawings
• Download relay configuration to devices in the factory
• Download PLC/RTU configuration to IEDs in the factory
• Perform functional testing of MV‑AIS/GIS switchgear integrated with control and protection IEDs installed in the gear
• Test ATS schemes for MM/MTM/MTTM applications implemented on protection relays, PLCs and/or RTUs
• Test and verify peer‑to‑peer relay and RTU communication (IEC GOOSE / SEL Mirrored‑Bits)
• Serve as a primary customer interface for factory tests, including troubleshooting and support
• Occasionally assist in developing new order proposals (bills of material, estimated engineering hours, etc.)
• Report process and tool inefficiencies and suggest improvements
• Configure, test, and commission relays for retrofit applications
• Perform factory acceptance tests (FAT) and site acceptance tests (SAT) for protection systems
• Travel to U.S. customer sites and to the Frankfurt factory in Germany or Wendell, USA for testing and support; occasional travel required

Qualifications

• BS degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field
• 5+ years of direct experience in configuration and commissioning of protection and automation systems
• Basic knowledge of communication networks (Layer2, Layer3, RSTP, PRP) and industrial protocols (IEC, DNP, Modbus, Profinet, Profibus)
• Knowledge of automation software: Siemens SICAM PAS/SCC, SICAM Device Manager, SEL ACCELERATOR SOFTWARE, SIMATICS7 (TIA Portal)
• Basic understanding of electrical schematic designs for control and protection of low, medium, and high‑voltage systems
• Experience with medium‑voltage protection schemes, including transfer and reverse interlocking schemes
• Familiarity with busbar protection, transformer protection, and breaker‑failure protection
• Knowledge of protection relay products and associated software from Siemens, GE, SEL, or ABB
• Electrical troubleshooting skills focused on protection configuration, schemes, and control circuits
• Strong communication skills and ability to work with cross‑functional teams

Preferred (Not Required)

• Capacitor bank protection experience
• Design, configuration, and troubleshooting of communication network technologies
• Knowledge of IEC103, IEC101, IEC104 communication protocols
• Familiarity with ANSI and IEC standards
• Line transmission and distribution protection knowledge
• Generator protection for small, medium, and large generators (including protection settings calculation)
• High‑voltage, distribution, and generation protection experience
• Experience with multiple vendors’ relay products and associated software
• Drafting skills using AutoCAD or MicroStation
